It's not forgotten here, there are quite a few memorials in the North of France and the southeren cities of Belgium (Ypres for example)
Hope it compensates a little

The old down talking the young, some things never change. But the fact of the matter is not everyone will remember dates, and most people will forget their history. Their are people who were listening to the radio when it happened who couldn't tell you the date. Just like I'm sure most people have no idea what July 1st or January 30th meant. Fact of the matter is, most will forget and few will remember. You just have to remember that every generation is great, not just the ones who were fighting in wwII.

This is the kind of crap they're being taught these days - not equal opportunity - equal outcome. Everyone is he same, no one is smarter or stronger or braver or better than anyone else.

You need to get over yourself. I didn't say it was good people don't remember what today meant. ****, I have a degree in military history and my focus was on dday, being pointed du hoc. I'm being realistic. This country needs to focus on all of the generations that have fought, not just the ones who we know. Be it the ones from ww1, ww2, Vietnam, golf wars, the current men going to war and all the others. Its everybody leading up today that have created what we are
Very proud of all those who sacrificed so that we could have so much. Thank you to all who served and those still in active service. A big salute to you all.
One of the guys in work actually thought Pearl Harbor was bombed today. Not a kid either, mid 30's. Then he blew it off like it didn't matter. I started to to get pizzed off and walked away.

Yeah, the golf wars maybe not so much. Better than maybe the whiskey rebellion. Should have replaced that with the civil war and revolutionary war. Regardless, like I said, I'm not trying to take anything away from WWII vets. I have a lot of respect for them. Especially the 2ed ranger battalion. But it bothers me how everyone forgets about older wars. The civil war and the generation who fought in it my opinion, were just heroic and honourable and just as deserving of the title "greatest". It takes just as much guts to walk in a line towards an enemy in a line as it did for those who climbed the cliffs at pointed du hoc and those who stormed Omaha.
The war of all wars was WWII more men died in very brave battles they knew they might not make it back from. This day was one of the greatest turning points for the war and for man kind. My grandfather was in the Navy during this war. He didn't talk much about it that I can remember I was young. I am 45
Thanks to all who served and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice

All wars deserve recognition your right! Just today is when D-Day happened.
I have the utmost respect for those guys
My dad joined the Navy when he was 15 as a gunner on a destroyer escorting convoys across the North Atlantic, after the war he signed up again and served on Aircraft carriers. He didn't talk much about the war but i am amazed at the sacrifices all branches made
My Father joined the Navy right after Pearl Harbor. My Mom had 5 brothers overseas. Uncle Terry was a Marine war hero, he fought in the Guadalcanal Campaign. Uncle Larry was a hero from battles in Germany. My brother's Father in law Paul was at Normandy, 2 days after the invasion. He was a hero from the Battle of the Bulge. It goes on...
My great grandpa was a WWII soldier god bless all the men who fought for their love ones safety in that war and thank you to all the members here who served so I can cruise in my c3 much respect and love for you all and your sacrifices for myfreedom
Lest we forget....
First up, I'm a New Zealander. I've always bee passionate about military history, and I've passed that on to my son who turns 16 tomorrow, has long 70's style hair, and plays bass in a heavy metal band.
But he can tell you more about WW2 than most adults. His favorite tv show was Band of Brothers, and as a special gift one Christmas, he got a replica 101st Airborne jump suit. On days where they didn't have to wear school uniform, and could wear what they liked, he always wore that. And as a result, he got other kids interested in history as well.
To the thousands of British, Canadian, American, and Commonwealth serviceman who fought on that day of days, I say thankyou.
