Default 1968 winshield - how much to replace??

I may be buying a 1968 vert in the near future. Told it had a cracked windshield.

If anyone has experience with replacing one, how much does it cost and how hard is it to do myself if I wanted to go that route?

Anything to worry about since it is a 1968 vs a 70 or later?

Thanks guys.

I had the glass in my 68 replaced. If I remember correctly the windshield was less than 200 plus the installation kit that I got from zip. It really didnt look like that big of a deal, so when my 77 needed a new windshield, I did it with help from my son. Where it sits in the opening obviously must be clean and solid. For the 77 I used a kit from NAPA and it worked out better. The sealant was a little thicker so as a result the glass sat up a little higher and the trim had less of a gap under it than the 68. Looks a lot better. Put the sealant in the opening with the paper backing still on facing out, so the glass can be put in and positioned where you want it. Mark it, remove the glass, take off the paper backing and lay the glass into position. For the most part its a one shot deal, so have a helper with you. Good luck.

Also, with the glass out its time to replace the old and rusty clips. If the top end peices have to be replaced, now is the time for that too, because with the glass out, its the only way you can get to some of those screws.

If you are concerned with future judging, your major expense will be a correctly coded and dated 68 windshield. If judging is not a concern, the automotive glass pros can install a replacement windshield in the car in your driveway.

Call around for estimates.

When I replaced my 69, the price difference was substantial between correct date coded and not. I think mine was $450 picked up and the plain one was $250.

Yes the year matters... '73 and later windshield glass curves different at the bottom due to the wiper door.

Also, sometimes a cracked windshield might suggest a weakening or rust/rotted holes in the windshield frame.

Thanks for the insight, guys. This particular car is probably running quite a few non-original parts already (engine, for one...) and I am only really interested in having nice driver.

Be aware that most of the 68 top windshield reveal moldings have more curve at the ends than the late 68-up cars. Do not damage it. Getting it out of the rusty clips is hard to do. You need to remove both side moldings and the top reveal molding to replace the windshield. Lou.
