Default Another C3 Puzzler

I have another C3 Puzzler question...I was doing some underbody cleanup and noticed the pan attached to the underside of the transmission has a small hole at the bottom exactly at the 6:00 position.....and it is not plugged......
Can someone enlighten me as to what the reason for the hole is....and should it remain unplugged??????????

As always thanks for your patience and terrific help...

That is the bellhousing inspection cover. The little hole at the bottom is a "drain" for any oil leaks that may occur in that area (transmission front seal; engine rear main seal; etc.). If you plugged off that hole, the oil would just collect until it leaked out the [un-sealed] seams on that cover.

P.S. We know that you are 'excited' about this issue. But, you really don't need to raise your 'voice'. {bold type indicates that you are yelling your question/response}

Mike, I have a 79 L82 model with a TH 350 trans and have have removed trans and pan several times. That part was not made with a hole, plugged or unplugged from GM. If you can put your finger into it and find no plug, the trans cannot hold fluid and not drive the vehicle. If the car drives, you don't have a problem. A photo of what you are looking at would be helpful, as a 6 o'clock orientation is vague without a 12 o'clock orientation.

A previous owner might have drilled a hole to drain trains fluid, but then a plug would have been added. Sometimes a hole is also made to add a temp sensor to monitor trans fluid temp.

Thanks for clarifying that, sounded like the trans pan to me and not the inspection cover under the flex plate. This hole seemed to explain itself.

Hi Red 69......It is not the trans pan with the hole as my 78 TH 350 did not have a drain hole for that year.....It is the pan towards the rear of the trans pan...BTW..Thanks for your input.....Mike
