I was working on the 78 restoration and had the tail section off the car. Out of morbid curiosity I looked on top of the tank and low and behold there is a piece of ancient paper covered in dirt and dust.
I managed to get it out intact (mostly) and now I need to know the best way to try and clean it without ruining it.
On my '77 the ink was very dried out and brushed off very easily. The later sheets seem to have been printed rather than typed. Do not do anything until the experts respond. Try to get as much info. from it as you can before trying to clean it. mike...
I agree I have all the pieces (3) in my shop on a shelf. I had so ideas but am afraid that I must wait. I am like a kid in a candy store because one corner is legible and I would like to get it presentable and frame it.
I only really got the original dealer info from mine. The Zip Code was legible so I tracked down the Dealer with that. Then I could make sense of the blurred Dealer address. I already knew the extent of options on my car and could verify most of them. The main thing I wanted to warn you about is that the ink will brush off with the dust. Hoping for a good result for you. Let me see if I can find a pic. of mine. mike...
Mine was very legible, but I was told that a museum curator would be the real expert to contact regarding saving any info. Hopefully there's someone in Orlando you can call this week.
i can tell you what not to do. dont use a brush to clean the dirt off the sheet. Most likely the dirt is dried up ink and will just brush off. i wont bother to tell you how i know.

I am sure that its similar to the way I now not to let a 15 year old son torque an aluminum intake un supervised
Go here http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...x.php?cmd=area and see if you can obtain a copy of the original dealer invoice for your car. The invoice will show everything installed on your car, including prices. The same information on your build schedule.
As far as your sticker, keep it dry. You can use a make up brush (soft bristles) to lighly brush away surface gook.

Another C3 owner shared he invested about $1500 to have data retrieved from his buildsheet by a document preserver so these documents are quite delicate as others have atestedl. Only an owner can determine the extent to which they which to invest and preserve build documents.
I also think a person who deals with old, old documents could help you. A genealogical society, museum curator, there may be someone right where you live.
Call a library in the nearest large city and ask for references on someone who does document restoration. They can either advise you of what YOU need to do or do it for you, if you wish.
Cleaning and preserving what you have is not an expensive proposition; but doing it improperly will likely disintegrate what you are working with.
