Default Question for EasyMike

Hey Mike,

I seem to remember reading in a post somewhere that you used undercoating in the cowl area (under the wipers arms etc.). I really like that idea as it seems like it would seal up things and be pretty durable.

Did you paint over the undercoating - such as a flat, semi-flat or did you just leave the undercoating as is? Would you happen to have a photo of that?

Thanks!

Adam

I used 3M automotive undercoating from the rattle can. It dried a very dark brown. It's paintable after it dries.

Hey Mike,

Did you leave it the brown color, or end up painting it black?

Thanks,
Adam

I painted it semi-flat black in appearance areas. Left it dark brown where it didn't make any difference.

I suppose it's up to you. Some cars didn't get much blackout in the wiper trough and show a lot of exterior color; other cars appear to have gotten more blackout coverage.

I have a related question. Don't mean to hijack this thread. Durring my restoration I removed all of that factory sealant from the wiper trough. It was a terrible mess in there from the factory. It looked like they just pourd it in and left it. All the sealant had dried and cracked so I chipped all the extra out of there and made it look pretty. I think I resealed the joints with a thin layor of sealant, but I don't remember. It's been 15 years. Anyway, from an NCRS standpoint, will they deduct points for not having the factory mess still in there?

Factory appearance is the criteria. All of the cars were supposed to have a similar appearance to this area, but it is likely no two ever looked the same.

Thanks Mike! I appreciate the help on this.

If it is judged as overrestored you may lose a point or two. It doesn't have to look sloppy but it wasn't pristine either.

Mine had gobs of sealant--looks like they were trying to make an ice-cream cone--Mark of Excellence...
