My 77 has the old type freon compressor and it's locked up. I want to replace the compressor with the new type (R134??).
Will it be possible for me to buy the compressor and accumulator, put them on the car, then take it down to have the system serviced / charged? Or, will it require special tools or something that only the service center would be able to do this?
Thanks
Is the system open now? The key is the proper elmination of all the old R-12 (evacuating the system) and proper disposal of the stuff. It's against the law to vent R-12 to the atmosphere, which is where the HVAC pros come into play.
If your system is open, the R-12 was gone long ago.
You could purchase the parts and make the installs, then have the HVAC folks charge the system. Some of the HVAC places will also make the changes for you, but you pay for that.
