Thanks, I have the door panel off. No blood yet. I can't find the rod that connects the handle to the lever that activates the door release mechanism. I suspect one (or maybe both) of the rod clips have broken. Should the rod be visible with the door panel off if I look inside the door?
Your problem could be located in several associated parts, and may not be in the door release handle at all. The outer door release is connected to the latch mecanism with a rod. The handle, the rod, the rod connector(s), some component in the latch, or the striker stud could be your problem.
You need to remove the inner door panel and look into the door openings to watch what is happening when you activate the outer door handle before you know what is causing the "unlatching" problem. Many such situations are simply because the latch mechanism hasn't been lubed in many years and it just becomes to 'sticky' to allow the rod to cause it to open.
