I've had my beautiful 81 six days and 18 hours. Just got it running again last night after replacing the HEI Control Module.
So I go out for a spin at the beach and halfway back I suddenly have no 2nd gear in the 4-speed. Clunk, it just won't go into 2nd.
I have babied it all week. No speed shifting, haven't really even pounded the Pace Performance 350/330 (4300 miles) to see what it can do.
Supposedly, the transmission was rebuilt when the Pace went in.
I'll have to take it in on Monday.
Before that, can you guys give me some pointers on what might be the problem so I don't sound like a complete idiot (which I am) when I talk to the tech.
Take a look at the shift levers where they attach to the trans. If the rear one is loose it could be your problem. If it's a Hurst shifter, and the stop bolt was not adjusted correctly (tight) it also could have worked loose and is keeping it from going into second.
So, I get in the car yesterday morning to take it to the shop. I figure I'll have to 1st to 3rd it to get there. I pull out of my neighborhood onto the main drag and figure I'll give second gear a try.
It goes right into 2nd like there was never a problem. Get to a stop light and try 2nd again (while stopped). No way. Take off from the light and no problem going to 2nd.
So it shifts fine while on the roll but when I stop at a light no going into 2nd.
Any clues, advise. The mechanic said the linkage was fine.
My 'guess' is that the linkage levers and plastic sleeve bushings are just about shot. Very inexpensive repair and easy, once you get under the car. Also, take info on the shifter set-up under there with you and adjust that at the same time. You will feel a WORLD of difference in the shifter when done with that relatively easy task.
