Default Weekend Project - Spreader Bar

This should be a nice little project.....
Got it from VBP for $109 (that is out the door tax and shipping to California). Great price...got a forum member discount!

Any advise before I start tearing into it ?
I have to move my power-steering pump as it is about touching one of my upper control arm bolts....may as well change my belts while I'm in there....

As long as you are running electric fans, that one should work fine. Jack up the car to let the front wheels hang before removing the a-arm bolts to install the brackets. Install the brackets, then roll the car a bit once the front end is back on the ground to be sure everything is settled before installing the bar. Set with a slight outward pressure on the bar and lock it down.

i just did this job and you are going to love it.i believe so will your vette.i did not use that one but i think all should work about the same.i set mine up with the car on the ground and the suspension settled.just to be snug and not under high pressure so as not to change any camber but to retain that setting.it comes very close to the water pump pulley so be aware of that.good engine mounts mounts might help here.best of luck!

Take pictures of your upper control arm shims, just in case any fall out when you loosen the bolts, you will know where they go.

Great tips.....I'll watch those shims!

Yes - Dewitts radiator and electric fans.....

Jacking up the car and letting the wheel hang - that is to make it easier to remove the nuts on the UCA's ? Then install the brackets and drive it a little to re-settle it - yes?

The spreader bar really makes a a difference huh ?!!! Awesome !

I installed mine on the ground, put a little pre-load on the bar, and tightened everything up.

Jacking the car keeps the UCS against the shims. You can do it without jacking as mentioned, but the UCA will move towards the center of the car as the nuts are removed. This is what allows the shims to fall out.

Yes.

Spreader bar made a big difference on my convertible.

Honestly, I had done so much to my vette already that it handled awesome before the spreader bar. When I did my frame off I went over all the welds on the frame, boxing the front for extra strength, adding gussets, and on the body adding double the steel to the rocker channels up into the A and B pillars and down the sides on each side with 3 piece rocker channel inserts. I also install offset trailing arms, VBP Performance Plus full suspension with Bilstein Sport shocks, and poly bushings everywhere, all new/ upgraded parts, steering box blueprinted by Gary, etc. and I have 17x9.5" wheels with 275/40 ZR17 Nitto NT555 Extreme tires.

So it's kinda hard to tell a difference since it doesn't handle anything like a stock Corvette did 30 years ago.

What is the purpose of the spreader bar?
Where does it actually go, on the car?
Pic please

It's to keep the upper control arm/ frame area from flexing, stiffen up the front for better performance.

Great pic, never seem that before, seems like something you can only do with electric fans.

it will work with the stock setup but it comes to within a half inch of the water pump pulley.
