Hi everyone, been thinking of doing this for years and now I am seriously going to do it. We go to Florida ever winter for 4 months in the Sarasota area. Would like to ship it down and then ship back to DE. Any advice to if closed trailer or open? New paint job, but just a driver car. 1973 Coupe yellow. Any carriers that you would recommend? Don't want the ones who breaks the bank, but reliable and honest.
Got a quote several years ago, from Goshen, IN to Sarasota and it was 6-700 one way open carrier. Don't remember whose quote it was. What part of Sarasota do you stay? I go down from latter Dec.-middle Apr.
I am a full time Florida resident. In the past, I have received a number of cars that friends shipped down to Boca Grande for the season.
I would look for a closed van, but I believe that it is the delivery driver that makes the difference, not the carrier. Many of the drivers I dealt with were clueless idiots who couldn't find their fly with both hands. They had not worked long for the delivery carrier.
Recommend A) that you verify with the carrier the identity and work history of the person delivering your car (but be prepared to be lied to) and B) get a copy of their insurance AND READ IT to be sure that they will repair the damage on their dime.
Finally, be sure to take many pictures as it is loaded AND many more pictures as it is being unloaded.

manofsteel1,
Intercity Lines would offer you a Corvette Forum rate of $1338 each way for fully enclosed, insured, lift gate loading and door to door service. If we can help you with your move please let us know.
I had good luck with my Vette when it was shipped from Texas. Shipper was CAC trucking. I think they ship all over. I bought another car on eBay and had it shipped from FL with no issues. Looking for the name of that shipper.
I also used the auto train once. They didn't chuck the wheels properly. My car basically mated with a very expensive Audi. They had to dig my EZ-Pass out of the Audi's bumper cover. I paid for the repair and AmTrak reimbursed me. They have adjusters on-site which leads me to believe that mine wasn't an isolated incident...

Reason: typo
If you ship it, definitely closed trailer, not open.
I shipped an Alfa from Tampa to Chicago last September, and the quotes came in around $1200 - $1400. That was from dedicated car carriers. I'm not sure if the distance is the same as Sarrasota to Delaware - it may be longer. Anyway, say you're going to spend about $2000 to $2500 round trip to have your Vette down there for four months if you go the car-carrier route. Personally, I don't think that's the way to go.
As others have said, I would drive it down and ship your luggage. If the car's not up to that long of a trip, two to two-and-a-half grand would go a long way to changing that, and then it'd be ready for next year, too.
You didn't say, but I assume you might already be driving down in something else if you're staying four months; maybe not. But if you are and the vehicle can handle it, consider renting a car trailer and just bringing the Vette with you.
