Default Engine ID

My name is Mito. I am a new member.

I need help:

I just purchase an old Chevy car. The car is not worth anything, it's all rusted out. I bought is because the gentleman I bought the car from told me the engine is a 427 and Turbo 400 transmission out of a 68 Corvette.

I am not able to read the casting numbers in back of driver side head due to it being too close to firewall. I did find a number in front of passenger side head and I hope someone can tell me what engine I have here.

Here's the number

1I2281B 100444

Thank you,

Mito

A picture of the pad would help a lot. Just a guess that your pad may read T1228??. The last two digits should be letters, IB, OB, AR, etc.. You'll have to double check. The last two letters will tell you which type of engine it is. The 100444 is the partial VIN of the car it came out of.

T- Tonawanda, 1228 - Dec. 28,

Hi m,
I believe IB indicates a 68, 427 out of a police car. Really, I'm not kidding!
Regards,
Alan

I was told that it's a factory 435 HP but I don't now cause it now has an after market aluminum Holly intake with a four barrel carb.

thanks

Hi Mito,
If it was originally a 68, 435 engine I believe the broadcast code would be
either IR or IU and would have originally been mated to a 4-speed transmission.
Regards,
Alan

I guess it's pretty common for MANY 427 engines with a 'foggy' past to be described as 435 versions. The broadcast code pretty well clears up the 'fog'.

Could also be a 396 cu. in. engine from '66 or '67. 325 horse.

Alan,

At first I wondered if it was a 396. The guy I bought the car from, swears it's a Corvette engine. I guess I will have to wait til I pull the engine to check the casting numbers on the back.

Thank you for all your input.

Best regards,

Mito

Hi M,
The only way you'll be able to determine if it's an engine that was built for a Corvette is by the Broadcast Code which indicates what application the engine intended for.
Mike's right about the 396 possibility; I only looked at 427 Codes. But again, an IB 396 wouldn't be a Corvette application.
Regards,
Alan

IB engines were not installed in Corvettes.

The other stamp could be the VIN derivitive of the car the engne was originally installed in.

Good morning Mike.

I think you're right, what we have here is a 396 engine. I was hoping it was a Corvette engine but I guess a 396 is a good engine.

Also, my friend has what appears to be a 53 or 54 235 Corvette engine he found in an old barn. It has three deuces side draft and dual exhaust manifold. He wants to sell it.

I appreciate all your help guys.

Best regards,

Mito

Could be Corvette. Has he checked the engine ID stamp? LAY or YG could be a good thing.
