Default question about '68 door panel

i have seen this "inner window seal" offered for the 69-82 models, but nothing like it for my '68. i do have the inner seal/felt that bolts to the door, but no trim piece like this that staples to the door panel. did 68 cars have this or something like it? does anyone have a pic of there finished '68 door panel? thanks, Rick

Hi Raz,
I looked in the Dobbins 68-72 book and there's a nice picture of a 68 panel showing the vinyl wrapping around the top of the panel and disappearing down in the window opening.
No ss trim or wisker in the picture.
Regards,
Alan

Hi Rick,
Look at the bottom photo on page 8.... "and all will become clear to you"!
I think that's part of a line from an old movie.

Alan

Raz.. I've got some crazy good pictures of the inner felt.. let me see if I can find them. I took them a couple of months ago. I have the felts but they are way different than the 69-82 style.

Hi Ernie,
Are you saying ALL the 68 door trim panels had the whiskers?
I'm looking at another picture on page 38 (same book) and don't see any trim or whisker.
Did it change when the second style door panel with a grab handle came along?
Regards,
Alan

Hi Alan And yes.. all of the 68 cars had inner whiskers.. The set up was a combo part.. You had a metal frame that bolted in and riveted to this frame was the rubber wipe (pinched between) and then the whisker. I'm logged into my office.. I know I have a great picture of this but I'm not positive I named it as such... It's doing a body scan of the entire main server looking for it right now.. lol

Rick.. I have a NOS set of these somewhere too... but I have some used that I can really picture up.

The two parts.. the rubber wipe and the felt were riveted to a metal support brace that ran the entire lenght of the door with the wipe... There is a 1/2 way decent pic of this in the assembly manual. But knowing how it assembled probably makes the picture a bit clear for me vs. not knowing and trying to look at it.

Let me see if I can take some pics tomorrow of the wipe assembly. I have a pic on the site of this but I don't think the detail is there to clarify what you need to see.

BTW.. the above pictures came from a very very early 68. But... This is one item that stayed the entire production run.

E

so, it looks like to me, according to the pics, there is no trim piece or "whiskers" mounted/stapled to the door panel itself, just the inner assembly that bolts to the door which has the felt and the rubber seal...if so, i am GOOD! thanks so much for taking the time to help me Ernie and Alan (two of my fav people on this great site) Rick

The fuzzies are in the AIM. For 68, they attach to the door and not the door trim panel.

and the "wipes" don't wipe anything, they are a a weatherstrip that seals between the door and the inner door panel. There are small bolts along the top of the door structure (under the door panel) that allow adjustment or R&R of the inner felt and wiper (the small bolts in the picture below--the larger ones are for your window alignment). These are the pieces that appear in Willcox's most recent picture. The outer felts snap and screw into the door frame through holes in the chrome trim strip.

At the risk of hijacking, I do have a question though: You can see above the right-most small bolt a square access hole. That hole is used to access the screws that secure the outer door fuzzy and the chrome trim. There are 3 or 4 of these holes. When rolled down as in the above picture, the window glass blocks some of them. I'm curious if there are "cutouts" at the bottom of the window glass that would allow a well-meaning Corvette owner to get access to those screws by simply rolling up the window, or if you have to remove the glass(!!), or if I'm missing something.

Hi,
Ah that explains it.
I was looking for a 'wipe' or 'whisker' where it is on the later trim panels.
Once again I should learn to not venture from that 71 in the basement!
Sorry!

Alan

68's Had nothing attached to the inside, door panel. They had the "pain to get it in the door", metal and rubber inner seal, that Willcox shows. In 69 they dropped this and changed to the seal stapled to the door panel. Rally68, you have to remove the glass to get to the small screws holding the SS outer door trim. Lou.

Alan- This contraption was put together.. felt, wipe and metal support... and then bolted in the car..

I think the least thing you should worry about is venturing.. Remember, all things that are odd happened in 62-63-67 and 68.... lol...
