I need to remove my hood on the 77 because I will be cleaning it up on the underside and repainting to help dress up my engine bay. Any tips on how to go about doing this in order to not mess up the paint on top side? Looks as if there are only a couple of bolts attaching it to the hinges on each side, but my concern is trying to keep from damaging anything once those are removed. My initial thoughts are is that this would be best tackled by three people..........one to hold the hood on each side of the car while the third person unbolts it. Any suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated.
I will be doing that for my winter rebuild, and planned on the three-person strategy as well. I hear that it is best to remove the bolts at the fender rather than those going into the hood. Mark there position accurately so that you can put it back just as it was and not have to deal with alignment issues.

Hi LudemJo,
The alignment issue is why I was thinking of removing the bolts in the hood instead. However, having never done this, there still may be alignment issues even with those bolts and if that's the case, I can see where removing the ones in the fendor would be the better option.
Leave the hinges in place on the fender skirts. Scribe (or otherwise index) the locations on the hood. Remove the four bolts.
Two people can do this. One can hold the hood (it is not heavy) while the other removes the bolts.
When the hood goes back on, line up the scribe marks and snug the bolts.
Thanks for the info Easy Mike. I'll give this a try. I figured the hood might be a little heavy based on how it feels when I shut the hood. Good to know it can be done with two people instead of three. With my son's help, I may try to pull her off this weekend
I took mine off with one other person. Really is lighter than I thought.
One thing I did was put blue painters tape along the edge of the hood and the edge of the fenders. Just in case they came together you would not lose any paint. And put tape when reinstalling.
Its easier with two but, I have done this by myself several times (again just last weekend). I use masking tape to mark the placement of the hinges and as Mike said leaving them on the fender skirts. When replacing it I lay news paper between the hood and the hood surround to avoid chipping the paint. I use rolled up towels to lift the hood while starting the bolts.
