Don't know the function of a small air tube (I think) which is located under the coil in the engione block. Small black tube that connects to a brass fitting in the block and appears to go through the firewall and then I don't know where, Black tube broke off at the fitting and as of now I cannot get the fitting out of the block. 1969 Corvette, 350 engine, automatic trans., I thinking it is some sort of sensor. Thanks for any info.
Sounds like your oil pressure line it goes to the oil pressure gauge in the console. If it is and you start the engine oil will come out you can plug the fitting until you can make the correct repair.
You need to remove the brass nut on the brass fitting. You may have to gently grab only the brass ferrule "ring" with small pliers to remove it from the tapered seat in the fitting in the engine block. Lou.
Thanks loup68 and Roco71, I have the brass nut off of the fitting but the tube is broken off at that level. I'm trying to get the base of the fitting out of the block. Tube is only large enough to get a fine wire in it. Will run the engine to see if oil comes out. Thanks both of U.
Thanks for the reply, the ferule sticking out of the fitting going in to the block is treaded and I didn't want to ruin the treads in case it didn't come out. I imagine it isn't easy to find a ferule and then is there anything on the end of the tubing, some sort of a flare that I need in order to put it back together. Thanks, Cowboylar
You can buy the original line with fittings included from several vendors on this site. Most auto part stores will carry the oil pressure line kits for under $10. You can probably repair the line (if it broke off close to the fitting) with a compression fitting like the ones in the line kits.
Cowboylar37, The oil line fitting is a special, tapered seat, compression fitting. The original fittings have a "captive Ferrule" crimped to the nut. This prevents the normal round ferrule from turning and cutting into the plastic tube. This always happens, when you try to use them on a plastic tube. Do not use a normal round ferrule. Do not use a normal ferrule fitting. The threads on the fittings and nuts are different. I would try going to NAPA. If you have to remove the brass fitting from the engine block, use a 1/4" six point, deep well socket. Lou.
Cowboy, If you go the route of replacing the line (not a bad idea) make sure you test it before putting the console back together. A leak at the back of the oil gauge will make a mess and ruin your carpet and radio.
cowboy, It really makes me feel good to have helped you. I had the oil line snap off and the lifters started clacking, on my 68 327. I thought that the engine was toast, so I drove it home. I added about two quarts of oil to my 327/350 and it ran fine for many thousands of miles and years. Lou.
