Thanks for the invite to be a neighbor! It only took 18 months to build the truck from scratch/the Vette is going on 4 years

Right now the PTSD is hammering me after the tragic year with my wife's parents and moving into a new home.

Yeah....I know.......

The front clip ('76 bubba' job) now has serious cracks completely across both wheel wells/"nose" section between headlight openings has cracked in two.

I'm going with a complete front end, hand laid fiberglass (can't spring for the $$$$$ press mold)..........

Suggestions/anyone selling a used front end/I've been watching the For Sale Forum for a while.

Out of curiosity; what makes the press molded part so much more expensive than the hand laid part? What's the difference in the parts?

I believe the press mold is the way it was done from the factory.... individual pieces were made separately, by laying resin & glass out in a mold, then "pressed" in to form the shape. Then the pieces were put together with "bonding strips" on the inside of the joints.
The hand laid is one big piece all done at the same time in a single mold of the whole front clip..
The difference in price, I`m sure, is two-fold.... one being man hours to make it piece by piece versus laying a whole one out, AND the press molded one being more "factory correct" way to do it.

Press molded parts are usually thicker and stronger. The inside is smoother. Hand laid can be weaker, due to being a hit or miss with laying the fiberglass in it. It can have more resin than fiberglass. Lou.

Corvette Image sells a complete one piece press molded front end that is jig assembled with bonding strips. However it is costly. Lou.

Lou. Thanks for the info. The problem is...the press mold front end will cost more than I originally had in the whole project. The car originally was such a basket case that I knew in the beginning I would not be able to go top dollar on replacement parts. So hand laid and "beefing up" thin areas.....
or finding/buying an original front end are my only options.

I'm going for the hand laid front end as well. $1600 U.S. versus about $4000 U.S. For me, not worth the extra $$$ for something you aren't going to see.

I bought a complete original front clip, that included wheel wells, for our 71 when we got it..... they are not a cheap way to go either!

Yes and you know I had to find a donor car to get a clip. That cost as much as a $4k clip and I got a whole car. But you already new that. Tony I will check around here and see if anyone has something. You can allway have the modigied one of the blue 69 I have.

Tony-
Every time I search Craigslist for Corvette parts, a guy in Bastrop, LA always has several ads. He doesn't list any '68 items right now, but he may have something that's not listed.

Here's a link to one of his ads.

https://monroe.craigslist.org/pts/d/...164107365.html

Good luck!

My optimism has faded about the bubba '76 clip even though I had a decent plan for rebuilding/converting the '76 clip back to a chrome bumper clip. I'm Kinda' glad now that all the problems with cracking happened before I did all the mods/paint.......

Passenger-side upper fender arch/two cracks/buckled fender lip......

6" & 8" cracks Next to passenger headlight opening...........

"Old bondo" is holding this piece on............

"I hear ya'!" We can "beef up the thin areas.

Hey Tony, not sure if this would help your front clip cause. I know you are pretty creative. Just a thought.

Doorgunner.

So reading some of the more recent posts..I am assuming you are looking for one piece hand laid front clip. What year specifically are you looking for ??? a 1968-1969 or a 1970-1972???

Are you planning on the fenders of the one piece clip to be used or are you keeping your original design fenders??? Which is why I asked the question above due to the fenders are different.

Also...IF you plan on putting the entire front clip on in its entirety...you are aware that the factory hood will look messed up because the ends of the top hood surround by the windshield is different and a bit of modification will need to be done to make that look 'fluid' and flow like what you have now.

AND if the front clip is going on in its entirely...then the side plenum area for the fenders will need to be modified.changed...depending on which era front clip you go with. This is done so you can bond the fender to the plenum on the side of the fender by the area rearward of the four openings for the 1968-1969 or the eggcrates for the 1970-1972. They are different.

I wish! The centers of the upper fenders are split all the way to the hood opeing, and forward of those cracks is worse....but thanks for the offer!
