benjiboy:...... the level of prep you put into the bare interior before installing the insulation. I.e. did you prep with wire wheels, sand paper, acetone etc to get to an absolutely bare surface or was it simply removal of the loose debris and existing insulation prior to installation?

Understanding the most prep possible yields the most adhesive results, I'm under the impression it may not be necessary to have such a perfect adhesive bond given the intended use and application location.

Cliff's Notes.......
Each member has their own way...for me, clean enough was good enough.

Wire wheels and sandpaper leave dust everywhere....itching skin is also a negative.
I removed the original carpet and backing that was stuck to the floorboards. and dabbed each area of the floorboard that needed cleaning-then used a paint scraper-adding acetone as needed to loosen the crud, then a shop vac to remove the waste (clumps of OEM felt backing/lumps of glue).

Then I wiped the entire area with a cloth dampened with acetone.

I used precut heat resistant sound deadener on floorboard "hotspots", and rolls of 1/4" thick by 36" wide HVAC double sided Foil bubble wrap.

I precut the HVAC wrap to fit the passenger side of the interior first since the steering wheel was in the way.

*I used heavy duty aluminum foil HVAC Tape to hold the edges of the glued wrap in place. I also used the HVAC Tape to join any wrap-seams together*

*I glued small areas as I worked the wrap into place...full adhesive coverage isn't necessary.... I brushed on contact cement doing small areas to keep the glue tacky*

I did not fully coat the entire interior with the glue in case I needed to remove the wrap or carpet for any reason.
I applied only spots of glue on flat fiberglass floorboard to hold the wrap in place, and extra glue on vertical areas to make sure the wrap did not sag.
I even wrapped under the dash, the upper floorboard, and the sheetmetal around the kick vents.....Glad I did.

Once I was satisfied with the wrap installation I tried fitting the new carpet which had felt backing, but it bunched up so much in corners, vertical areas, and under the gas pedal that I removed the felt backing. This helped the new carpet lay down smoothly.

DO NOT TRIM THE EDGES OF THE NEW CARPET YET...WAIT UNTIL YOU INSTALL THE SILL PLATES AND THE KICK PANELS SO YOU CAN MAKE SURE THERE IS ENOUGH OVERLAP OF CARPET TO TUCK UNDER THE PLATES AND PANELS

When I was satisfied with the look of the test-fitted carpet I used the adhesive to hold the carpet to the HVAV wrap---I started in the center of the passenger floorboard and added spots of glue (example: 4" by 4") while working the carpet down flat.

Then I worked on the driver side using the same method.
Then I covered the inside of the door fiberglass/door-skins because of the sidepipes and road noise
I also covered the rear interior of the car including the underside of the deck and the deck lid the same way.

The car was so much cooler and quieter in the interior afterwards.

IF YOU have more questions--ask away.

Hey Tony,
Nice write up.
When I purchased my new carpet from Al Knock, they warned me about using too much heat and noise materials under the carpet.
Like you, they warned the carpet will not lay right in certain areas and there would be to much built up under the accelerator pedal.
Great minds!

I'M BACK....KINDA'......

9 months of PTSD Misery is slacking off today. To celebrate I mounted the headlight Vacuum Test Stand on the wall since it was taking up too much floor space On the floor

I'll get a diagram and run the vacuum lines to each headlight and rebuild the left headlight vacuum cannister.

I also need to repaint the garage floor...good thing I bought 2 extra gallons of concrete paint in 2021.

The only problem is...I can't see the Vette anymore. Since the weather is so bad I couldn't move all the collected boxes, bins. transmission case, etc outside to do the cleanup properly.
SO...the car with the top off is loaded down with everything until I rearrange/clean/paint the back half of the garage floor.
()no picture of the car....I'm too ashamed of the mess
8 hours....but it was fun compared to the mental torture I've been going thru

Ohhhh...I had to rebuild the air compressor....managed to do it right the 2ND TIME!.

Hopefully more pics tomorrow...if the tornados stay away!

Annnnnd buy a vacuum pump for the garage projects.

Het DG...glad youre back. I bought the harbor freight A/C vacuum pump and use a Christmas Tree Light remote i got from bed bath and beyond. The pump had no on off switch and i used an old roofing nailer hose to attach at one way "y" tee and at the pump. I also teed in a gauge and would draw it down to 15 to 20 inHg. The long hose let me put the pump outside out of ear shot so i could Hear any leaks....works great and was cheap

Tony,
It’s so awesome to hear you are back!
I was able to get off my butt today as well.
I didn’t get nearly as much done as you did.
Try to keep it up.
Keep us posted and I hope to see some progress on the Corvette soon.

Thanks R.R. I was concerned about the pump noise.

I stuck one in the mail for you, I'm pretty sure it'll still be frozen once it gets there

It's been an unseasonably mild January so far, day time highs between 14 F and 32 F. I've gotten a little done on the car but not as much as I'd have liked given the mild weather.

Priya...Priya...Priyaaaaaa....32*F is nasty cold down here

I'm on a roll....worked in the garage 2/TWO days in a row now. I "roughed-in" the rear half of the garage....

Now to store all the gathered-up bins into the attic...and throw away the 4 lawn-leaf bags trash I shoveled up in two days.

So that's where you've been/I got lost in my misery and forgot you were moving into God's Country

I dove back in to the garage this a.m. What hapeened was...because the car is still in jackstands...
I shoveled all the PTSD trash underneath the car toward the garage door.
Then I applied concrete paint......

Sufferin' succotash.......

Now I can actually see the floor and do some painting.........

That's a little better at the front half of the car

That’s a nice fan Tony.
How many amps will it pull and will you need to upgrade your alternator?

There is something so therapeutic about painting the garage floor and having a nice clean place to mess up again. Glad your feeling a bit better.

i have a paver stone driveway. every oil drip is there forever. they won't clean up and you can't paint them! i am thinking of spreading waste oil over the whole thing and letting it soak in, then gunk-etch-powerwashing, that way the drips will match the rest...
