It was really nasty/scratched up with original black paint and cruddy white lettering. It took about an hour to sand and polish the potmetal/fill in the lettering/clearcoat with fast-drying model car paint.
Let's look at it again .......
I keep getting side-tracked easily, but I'll seriously try to finish the dash reinstall today.
Did not happen(ed).....but I made progress. I installed the vacuum hoses/the overide switch and routed the hoses through the firewall this morning/then chased parts/screws/etc.....
This afternoon I set the driver's panel in place/NO problem...EXCEPT....the lower part of the panel warped from hanging on the pegboard for a year ...my fault! I will fabricate a brace to make the lower part of the panel straight agai where thesteering column sticks through......
I COULD have mounted the center gauge cluster, but it would probably be in the way while installing the brace under the driver-panel.
I did find a 2nd wire from the alrm module that should hve been connected to a relay rather than the siren...easy fix.
Now I can wrap all those exposed wires I see behind the gauge cluster ........
Will be back tomorrow with more pics...unless God has different plans.
Now that I have the driver panel neatly in place.....
I THINK I'LL REMOVE IT
It's "Buck-Toothed" really bad at the very bottom where the steering column fits...and looks even worse this morning.
It will be much easier to fab a stout horizontal brace on the workbench.
Thanks again you guys for convincing me to add the extra foot of wiring to all the dash gauges.
The panel install is now a 3 minute job!
Now...out to the garage to do some blacksmithing
Tony, how are you going to install your under column manual controls with the brace there? Lou.
GOTCHA! I'm counting on U forum members to figure that one out. I need to pull up a pic on the web to see the original locations...in three years "I forgot"
When I finish bolting the braces in place I'll post some pics of the possible switch/odo reset mounting points from different angles.
Remember...since it's a basketcase, "close-enough" and functional is what counts.

Just curious, where were your controls located? Very early 68's had the round **** and then the two pull down controls under the tach on the right side. . Then they put them centered under the steering column, one vacuum control on each side of the round ****. Lou.

Sorry I didn't explain everything....the odo reset and the vacuum over-ride were just hanging under the dash. It doesn't matter to me where they get attached, but I don't have a bracket to mount then directly under the steering column,,,so that location is out.
I found this pic from ALAN71.....
I'll go to the garage and take pics of the brackets I found...will be back in 10 minutes.
I found an original firewall thru-hole to the left side of the steering column directly behind the speedometer (no more fighting bends and the steering column to connect the speedometer cable--it's a straight shot the gauge.....
Red backlighting (it's that aviation thing going on)......
Same deal on the center cluster.......
NOTE TO ME: CONNECT THE OIL LINE BEFORE REINSTALLING THE CENTER GAUGES!

You guys are right...(parts somehow jump from one box to another)...AGAIN !
I started to install the center cluster...but first CONNECT THE OIL GAUGE LINE.
THEN I noticed...NO Wiper Switch...NO problem...looked on the pegboard...
NO switch.
Digged thru 10 labeled boxes... NO. Switch.
Don't you love it when the gremlins steal stuff.
