Default 69 rear key

My 69 that I'am restoring has a key slot over the corvette letters on the rear. Have not tried my keys yet. Was not sure if it was bubba at work or if this is a stock item maybe for the spare tire?? Anyone

It is how you would set the alarm on the vehicle. If you have the original keys it should be the round one I believe.

Try inserting your door key and turning 90*. Then open your door and wait for it. (It's the alarm switch) Consider yourself lucky if it works. It should also go off if you open the hood.

The Alarm system is set by the Door Key. I have yet to test mine also in my 1977 the key was were moved to the front drivers side fender in later years. The Alarm system was installed for many years on the Corvettes and the horn is generally installed near the Driver Side Rear Wheel.

you could try buying a cheap key extractor. they cost $5 or try to make one that will work out of a small paper clip

I tried something a little different to get a broken key out of a car door lock and also the lock on my freezer. It worked both times, too. Use a dental pick to hold the little door cover open, then put a very, very tiny drop of Crazy Glue on a paper clip. Put it in the slot against the broken key and hold it very still for a couple of minutes until it's dry. Then carefully and slowly pull straight out. All you have to do is get it out far enough to grab it with some needle nose pliers and you're home free. Good luck!

It's the optional factory alarm. It arms and disarms with a small key (possibly says Briggs and Stratton on it).

I tried to replace this on my 1970 and the alarm switch listed above did not fit. The hole was too big. Are there 2 different versions of this part??

Yes there are 2 different versions of the alarm lock. mid '68 to mid '70 used the lock pictured. It has no door in the key way and locks would fail due to dirt entering the keyway. In mid 70 a lock entered production that looks just like the door lock. It had the door protecting the key way and used the round head key that also worked the glove box and spare tire lock. When this lock was used to replace the earlier lock the hole in the tail panel had to be enlarged.

Most part sites list an early 70 and a late 70 alarm lock.

Default rear key lock

If the OP does not have another Briggs key, no use messing with it. Just purchase the replacement. The only thing that the Briggs key was used for was the alarm lock.

a locksmith charged me $25 to make me a key for my tool box lock. He could remove the broken one and make you a new one if you want to keep the original cylinder
