I am looking to replace my 76 radio... I currently have an aftermarket radio. Previous owner cut a hole to make room, etc. I have a new center gauge cluster and want to put a stock looking radio in without breaking the bank. any recommendations? thanks...
If I understand you correctly, you do not have the "original" Delco radio. If correct, then, "No", you can't get it to original condition without 'breaking the bank'.
A '70-77 Delco radio will cost you anywhere from $150-300 just for a non-functional, but complete, radio head unit. You also need to have a matching 'convector' unit to act as the final stage of amplification for the radio. The head and convector are either a "monaural" unit or a "stereo" unit.
Once you have a decent 'slave' radio head, it needs to be fully restored and that will cost you another $400-700, depending on what radio you have and what you want done. As mentioned above, some restoration shops can install modern electronics in the stock head unit and make it fully functional and better performing than the '70 vintage radios. This is a very good way to go, if you are not a stickler for "completely stock". But, that will cost you about $400, also.
Then, you need to get speakers of matching impedence to whatever radio unit you purchase. In total, you will spend $800-1000 to obtain a well functioning 'original' or 'upgraded' stock-looking radio head.
ok, I have the one out of the 73 Monte Carlo BUT my vette isent here right now. but from when ive pulled out the AM/FM 8-track out of my vette to replace the belts on the 8-track player they look the same. the monte has a black face on it with silver lining around the band indicator, and the one in my vette is completely silver, same with my 77 Monte Carlo with an AM/FM 8-track player in it
I may go with the 160.00 radio above, I'm already into this car enough$ I do not have a stock radio but could have purchased a bench tested stock one for 150.00 a while back. I think the one above will look good with my new guage cluster.
its like looking at my own car...I even have the same rug mats. Can't wait to clean up htat area with new radio and center guage cluster..radio should be here in a day or two.
how do I attach photo? its looking for a url address
Give ebay a try. I found an '76 radio in great condition on ebay to replace an aftermarket radio in my '79. I "bought it now" for $160. Had to change the ***** and get a new gage cluster bezel. It works and looks great.
