Hi, I'm not a C3 expert by any means. I was hoping someone would offer an opinion on the following 1970 Vert for sale on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970-Chevrolet-Corvette-Stingray-454-Big-Block-/390663083788?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item5af555970cI would like a big block "correct original Corvette" (I realize the radio is not correct) with Auto, PS, PB.
Do you see any obvious issues?
Thank you very much!
(I would prefer a 1969 427 Big Block but this one is close to my "wish list")
Hi 58,
That's a nice looking 70 convertible. Some of it looks quite good in fact.
You emphasized "correct original Corvette"
The car in the pictures has some aftermarket parts on it at a quick glance.
Exterior: L-88 hood
Engine: Headers
Chassis: Mono rear spring
Interior: Radio (you mentioned it)
I'd think that list would probably grow upon a close, knowledgable, inspection.
So, how serious are you about having a "correct original Corvette"? What do those words mean to you?
What sort of money is it going to take to buy this car do you think.
Regards,
Alan
My only advice - don't buy the story - buy the car.
The seller might say - "But Zora Himself owned this car!"
If it is a rust bucket, it's a rust bucket.
Go over all the obvious rust issues.
Check Check Check.
EXAMINE the underbody, brake lines, etc.
I would never bid on a car unseen.
Alan pointed out some non original items .
here are some other small aftermarket ones too
1. chrome auto shift ball ...should be black
2.Chrome alternator , master cylinder cap, thermostat housing
3.front body gills painted all the way . edges should be left chrome .
I could go on and I know these are small items but they add up to big $
Now I'm biased since I have a 1970 marlboro maroon 454 vert (with a 4-speed). If the documentation is original (invoice etc) then it could be a great candidate. That said:
Tires will need immediate replacement. I don't even remember the last time I saw Eagle II's on the road.
Are any parts left over from the restoration? The alternator alone will run $800-1k if you want to bring back to factory. No pass mirror offered either (dealer item? It's not listed on the invoice).
This was not a frame-off restoration. All restorations differ. The quality of paint will be telling. The lack of chrome stripes on the eggcrates really stood out to me (I'm sure only people on this forum would notice). Keep in mind the paint pattern of the chrome stripes differs in 1970 from 71-72.
Tarentum PA (Pittsburgh) loves rock salt to treat winter roads. Check the usual areas for rust. Not that I saw any around what was exposed from the windshield frame etc.
Thank you very much, you all bring up valid points. I guess the hood, excess chrome under the hood and other items do add up. I was thinking to spend in the $35-40K range and maybe should keep looking. I agree that a full inspection by a C3 expert before purchase is a good idea. My preference is still for a 1969 with a 427, Auto, PS, PB.
