When I've put on 'other' shocks on other cars I thought "meh - its OK".
When I put on the Bilsteins I actually said "Jes*s, M*ry and J*seph !" and thats no lie. Its like black and white. So you decide what you want.

Rambling: On my '36 1/2 ton pickup, I tried several brands trying to get a "good ride" (good ride to me is: I don't feel every expansion joint on concrete roads at 30mph) I ended up with Monroe Sensa-tracs....the '36 rides like a car now! Of course that favorite 70mph curve is now a 60mph curve because of the softer ride....but I do a lot more cruising than I do curves!
So........define "the best ride"/throw in the word "compromise"..... and find shocks that "do it" for you.
When people say "best ride" they usually mean softest ride. Seems to me Bilstein HD would provide a stiffer ride, correct? So I don't think that's what he wants.

I just put a set of Moog springs in the front and a slightly used rear metal spring in the back. It stiffened up the ride a lot.
I have KYB's all around, now and I feel everything.
They are a good sporty shock but did I mention I feel everything.
I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Bilsteins HD so I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and pay the $85.00 a shock price.
Life is tough when your age is approaching the speed limit.
Anyone want a set of KYB's wit about 10,000 miles on them reasonable?
