I had to remove the steering wheel to get the cluster out in my 82 but now that I have everything back together the horn goes off just from the idle of the car. I removed the horn cap and looked at the ring and see a very slight deflection where to depress the horn cap. I have tried adjusting it three different times but the horn still blows by barely touching the steering wheel. What am I missing or could I do.?
Al.. did you bend the contact on the horn contact when you removed the button? There should be about 1/16th of an inch clearance between the fingers that hold the horn button and the base of the contact all the way around. If you don't have this look at it and see where it's bent..
I'm sorry, that's about the only answer I'd have on this issue.
I had the exact same problem on my 79 I bought a week ago turned out to be the concave metal disc was in backwards and also the horn button tab cut out was at the 4:00 position instead of the 12:00 position. Put it all back the way it is suppose to be and all is good now.
On mine I found that the spring disc (inner part of the ring) was just as flat. Pried it up a little and put back together. Works like it's suppose to now.
