I have had my 79 for a week now, I absolutely love the 4 speed and the car shifts very well. Question is other 4 speed cars I have owned have always had a spring or something to align the shifter with first and second if I remember correctly when it is in the neutral position. My shifter will just stay where you leave it in the neutral position. It's not sloppy of tight feeling, so if this is not how it is suppose to be what are your recommendations to fix it? Thanks
My shifter also has no real spring action that moves it towards the 3-4 gate either. Trans is rebuilt and shifts flawless, I disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and reassembled the stock shifter. Its smooth enough.
I have a hurst shifter too, had it in the car, the 4 fwd gears have a nice positive short throw. The reverse, is a bit awkward to get into compared to the stock shifter. I removed the hurst unit and put the stock one in for now.

How is reverse achieved with the Hurst shifter? Last 4 speed car which was a Z 28 I had to lift the shifter up and over to reverse.
ide go with a Hurst comp or Indy shifter, they have stops on them as well that lets you know when you are in that gear. and its just cool to me to say "yeah, its got a Hurst"
what handles are you guys using on your HURST shifters? Straight, curved, offset? I sit with the seat all the way to the back so I am thing a slight curve would work better for me instead of straight.
I had a Hurst Super Shifter II in my 70 Torino. It was spring loaded and sat at the 3/4 gate unless you pulled it towards the 1/2 position. It was very precise and it was just "click", "click", "click" to shift gears - loved that shifter.

I have always liked the feel of the T handle in my hand. I have one on the vette.
I use the straight shifter but one with a slight curve would be nice. I couldnt find one with just the right ammount. I am going to heat mine up and bend it a bit one day.

Can anyone recommend that just right shifter stick for our 4 speed C3's?
when you buy the Hurst Competition shifter do you need the installation kit? It's confusing because they say no vehicle modifications necessary in the shifter description.
