Don't paint them at all. If you do paint, do not paint the braking surfaces.

Possibly brake failure. Brake pads are designed to work against bare metal. They are not designed to attempt to scrub off paint.

Since very little of the rotor shows which is not the braking surface, I'm wondering whether you mean painting rotors or painting calipers.

Yep, but he specifically said "rotors."

I painted the entire rotor. Waited about ten minutes then wiped off the pad contact areas with a disposable cloth rag and lacquer thinner. mike...

Already painted calipers...just didnt want to mask. Also figured it wouldnt be much for the pads to remove the paint

How will you get the burnt paint off the pads?

In case the OP did ID his component as described, here's what I did with mine.

In the same vein that many cast iron master cylinders are left bare to rust, I wanted to "dress up" the hub or visible portion of the rotor once the suspension is completely assembled and the car is on the ground.

I know that any surface rust on either of these components have no ill effect on their performance so this was nothing more than detail work for appearances sake.

I also knew with 5-spoke wheels, the hub can be more easily seen. After measuring how much bare metal is exposed below the disc pad towards the hub, I masked off both sides of the rotor where the pads clamp down. Shot with high temp black.

I also thought that the rotor vanes can sometimes be seen so I shot inside of them with a high temp clear. This was my result and though they are not correctly restored Stingray, they still keep the rust from developing and to date, clean up nicely.

YMMV.

If the OP was searching for this component as an example, then there you go. Good luck.

Mask or wipe off the paint, if you don't mask. {Man, how much trouble can it be to put a cardboard cut-out over the rotor surface???}

Better than cardboard, use an old plastic placemat. Nice and thin so it could tuck in real tight without leaving unpainted surface. Flexible and easy to cut too.

,

When I last painted a set of rotors I simply used a couple pieces of cardboard with openings cut out to go over the rotor hub.

I made sure that the cardboard was large enough to cover the actual braking surface.

Worked like a charm, didn't make for extra work to clean the braking surface, and didn't cost anything extra!

I painted the rotors like you said. The pads took the paint off first stop and never had any problems.

Believe the rotors were simply bare metal finish from the factory.
