been lurking for awhile. finally decided to dive into my dads 81. had a clunk in the rear end and decided to drop everything and replace all of the rubber. found a few more things.
pinion seal and yoke seals all leaking. opened up the diff and found this.
i'm guessing that that center pin shouldn't look like that.
in this pic, it looks like there's a tab of some sort that slipped out of place.
well considering there are metal particles all through the assembly, I cannt see anything other than a total rebuild or purchase a rebuilt one from one of the vendors.
well, there's alot of light reflecting in there. I don't see those in real life. could be the flash.
I ran a magnet through the fluid and it maybe picked up a spec or two. running my finger on the gears i didn't pick up anything either.
I figured the damage has been done and the fluid was changed.
Is that pin supposed to look like that or should it be smooth throughout. at work now but if I recall, turn one yoke turns the other in the same direction. Posi shot too?
I had two 81's yeah, I dig that year,
I put over 100K miles on one and at about 75K the rear went out, the rear on the 81 is different to eariler c3 vettes so be sure you get one that fits
The worn shaft is common. You will need to replace it and the stub axles. Also common is the stripped right side clutch pack. This is a design flaw in the carrier and needs to be upgraded. You will find a lot more metal in the cavity between the pinion bearings.

hey guys, newbie back. i've got the diff torn down to where i need to get the center pin out. unfortunately its not coming out even with some mild knocking with a hammer. you can see a pic of it and the wearing down it has in my original post above. do i need to do some grinding or can i aggressively knock it out? i was afraid of damaging the gears if pounded too hard. and yes, i have removed the spring/lock washer things.
