On start up no fuel is going in the carb. But after I put a little in the carburator it will stay running for as long as I need it to. What can my problem be?
You actually disconnected the fuel line to carb, cranked it, and no fuel was being pumped?..or, the carb has no fuel in it, after it sits for a few days?
I suspect the later, as that is fairly common.
If so, more then likely the fuel is leaking out of the carb, into the intake manifold.
Other possibilities, incorrect fuel filter at carb inlet, and/or bad fuel pump.
Hi tg,
Remember carburated engines start very differently than today's injected engines.
The 71 owner's manual instruction is to depress the pedal once to set the choke and then if it's very cold 2 or 3 more times BEFORE turning the key.
So a total of 4 'pumps' of the gas pedal on a really cold day. They want a lot of fuel for the spark to fire.
Because my car sits for many weeks between being run I consider it a really 'cold' start, I pump 4 times total, sit and wait about 15 seconds... (re-set the clock)...and then turn the key and it starts. It's a Lars rebuilt q-jet so that certainly helps too.
Maybe this procedure will help you? Are you getting a squirt of gas when you look in the carb and operate the throttle linkage?
Regards,
Alan
