I am removing my gas tank, and replacing it, due to a contaminated gas issue. The bolts holding the spare tire carrier came down very easily once soaked with "KROIL". Once I get the tank down I have several months to wait for a new tank so i would like to paint the frame members. Does anyone have experience painting rusted metal. The metal it self is quite sound good as new for a 1973; I would like to keep it that way.
For a low-budget, but decent frame clean-up which will last for many years, use a power drill with a 3-4" wire brush on it to knock all loose/rough rust and corrosion off the frame members. Wash it down well with Simple Green or other suitable water-based cleaner and hose it down well to remove oil/grease and soap.
When completely dry, apply POR-15 products as recommended. POR is meant to be used over a firmly attached, but rusty, surface. It converts the rust and bonds to it.
For even less expense, just put on a good coat of brushed-on Rustoleum semi-gloss black paint.
