Default Parts ID Please

Spent some time looking through the AIM today, and found nothing to answer this question: where the hell do THESE go?

I'm assuming (with emphasis on the first three letters) the object on the right is, perhaps, an ignition wire shield or guide (like those I see installed both sides of the distributor) and - maybe it attaches to the two ears in Pix #2 - outboard of the header. But the holes don't match up.

Another ASSumption is, the part on the left is a heat shield that likely wraps around the upper header pipe near the manifold and possibly protecting those ignition wires. It fits around the pipe, but I see no means to secure it other than bending the tabs which looks mighty shaky to me.

Any insights welcome.

Thanks.

you're exactly right about what those are

you can loosen the bolt holding those tabs and then pivot the tab until it lines up with the hole on the heat sheild

Thanks. That answers the question about the part with the two brackets on the right. But the cylindrical shield on the left - how is IT fastened? There are two holes in the metal - are those intended for fasteners, and is the unit secured independently of the other part? Or, is the shield secured with stainless band (hose) clamps?

Appreciate the help.

Back to the optional radio section in the AIM; your pic is of ignition shielding which was used on the factory radio cars. Same AIM section shows how the stuff was installed.

That black block with the horizontal pin - underneath two plug wires, what function does that serve? I found one in the parts box with my car, and I ASSumed it was a seatbelt pulley.

Second, I'm still in the dark about the cylindrical unit and how/where it's fastened.

Thanks for all the info so far; I know a lot more about this today than I did 24 hours ago.

That's either good news or bad news: good news if my memory's right, recalling something about the P/O 'replacing a motor mount.' Bad news if he didn't, and the pristine look of the unit I found in the box still needs to be installed.

If the motor mount "in the box" is a new one, it is likely the 'extra' one he got in a new box of 2 mounts. Now, that begs the question as to whether he ONLY changed one of the mounts. This would not be a good thing to do...both mounts are old, but only one has failed. Do you replace only the bad one???? NOOOOOOO!

So, you need to look at the mounts in the car and see if one looks new and the other looks old. If so, it's BEST that you replace the other old one at this time. (You might also call the PO and ask if that is the case.)

Appreciate the heads up. Going to inspect now.

Not sure if it makes any difference to you or not but it appears that your spark plug wires are turned around. Note the ends..that little **** fits through a retainer that sits on top of the distributor cap.

Another thing I didn't know. (They're adding up fast. )

Apparently the P/O (I have to blame somebody 'cause I didn't do it) was unaware of this. I'll add this to the 'to-do' list.

Thanks.

RE: motor mount. Tough call on this one; the left side mount definitely looks newer than the right side. But both seem to be okay; no heavy rust, scale or indication of impending failure. Then again, earthquakes are impossible to predict too. Logic would suggest I try to replace the right side with that new unit. I'll try to take pix and seek opinions later.

That "cylindrical" shield mounts to the 2 tabs in your pic using the 2 holes you noticed.
The bolts, some early years used wing bolts, install through the shield holes into the tabs from the top. Can be tricky to get the bolts started. There should be one on each side covering the last 2 spark plugs each side. And notice the 2 are opposites. The DON'T cover the exhaust manifolds.

And I agree, your plug wires are on wrong, end for end!

Driver side motor mount usually fails first due to engine torque.

Heh! An understatement. With my fat fingers and the 'Vette's tight spaces, it added up to a 2.75 beer job.

It's good you mentioned the wing bolts; I found a bunch in the parts box wondering what purposed they served. Anyway, after struggling for awhile I finally managed to get that hunk of tin mounted and the wires squared away.

Gen Chevy should've put a label on that part:

"You can take this off, but just TRY to put it back on!"

Thanks for your help; much appreciated!

No worries, Scott. When it comes to widgets, parts and mysterious pieces, I'm a serious hoarder. Nothing gets tossed; everything is saved.

I've already found several necessary items, including the anchor washers, grommets, and chrome seats for the rear luggage rack. There are quite a few other bits 'n pieces as well.

I've got plenty of room in the garage and intend to use it.
