I have a 78 L82, 4spd close ratio trans, with 3:70 rear. Been on the dyno and it's producing 273torq. Not bad for an engine with 103,000 miles & low compression. Around town this is plenty. Even went to the dragstrip for street nite and ran in the 14's, and had fun winding it out.
I came from a modern LS1 that made 560RWHP and 540RWTQ so you bet I was a little worried about TQ on an older car.
I find my BBC still brings a smile to my face when the loud pedal drops.
Since his frame of reference is "...low hp (rating) but say 270 torque", I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the engine the OP is referring to and yours are at slightly different power levels. He may be fine with the power level he's talking about but I wouldn't be. Coming from your prior LS1 (forced induction?) I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be happy either. However, having a mellow cruiser is one of many ways to enjoy a Vette.
No, just that there is no place around here to put that much hp/tq to use. I dont need it for the driving I do and having the tires break loose is no thrill for me.
My brother has a rebuilt 502 in his Chevelle, 5spd tremec, and 411 rear. I drove the car and there is no reason for me to have that kind of power. It is scary fast. Going to the dyno this week weather permitting. PO told him 500+hp. Sorry, not for me.
Curious how much hp/tq do you have that makes you happy?
Sounds like the op is looking for a regular driver that has some pull & not going overboard on the $.
76 L48 was preety slow off the line till......heads,intake ,carb ,hyd roller cam,& Richmond 6spd trans..Now ....My first gear ratio 3.28 X 3.08 rear gear makes for quick take offs...Overall 10.1:1
A major contributor to pushing back in the seat is the 3:70 rear, with anything less than say a 3:55 alot less push back.
Not to be a smarty,....but if you ever drove a Dodge Duster with the slant six and smushy rear springs you'd swear you were launching a Pro Stocker from a dead stop. If all you want is to feel that push in the seat,.....put some light springs in the rear.
