Default storing car outside help

no other option than this...will be on grass so should I put plastic barrier down, 4x8 plywood or what would you suggest, will be outside for couple years, no other choice. I will build a wood box around it so will be covered from element and hopefully keep vermin out. thanks.

What year? Sounds like the beginning of a potential "Shed Find." Where do you live or would be be storing the car? I would say that if you don't at least put like a tarp down underneath the car, then grass and bugs, animals and mother nature will do some harm somewhere. I would think that some plywood or some thin sheet metal would be a good starting place. This "wood box" is just simply a box..or a will it be more like a single car garage that has a garage door? What ever you build, make sure it has a strong enough foundation.

Have you thought about portable storage options, like a "Car Pocket", or portable garage / awning?

First off all you don't want to store it outside with just a car cover. It'll rot from humidity. Rains that soak the cover will bath the car in a humid environment that will really rot it. Don't question this statement...accept it's true from my experience. A big help is to get an awning and cover the car with the awning, and the car covered with a car cover. This is for So Cal where there really is not to much rain...but a lot of morning dew. The next step is a completely enclosed fabric garage..ShelterLogic. the fabric garage will cost about $1500 and will last 10 years. It's best if you put it on a concrete pad...almost as good as a garage.

My brother got a 20x12 Shelterlogic shelter (the HD one with the steel tubes) for around $1,000. He put down some stone, used some PT 6x6's and some other PT 2x6's to make a floor frame, placed some heavy mil plastic down over the framing and screwed down 3/4" PT plywood. He then placed the shelter on the frame. It's been up for a few years...it went through Sandy and some heavy snow at it still looks as good as new. He uses it to store his ATVs and sleds. He ever ran power to it for a light and an outlet for a battery tender. Oh yeah, after the fact, he placed a concrete footing with a large eye-hook outside of the storage shed....he runs a large chain from the footing through his toys.

My buddy also has a large HD fabric tube frame shelter where he stores a small excavator, skid steer loader, etc. His shelter is on crushed stone. He has stored a car in it for an extended period of time with no issues. In his case, he placed heavy mil plastic down over the stone, some cheap 1/2" plywood and then stored the car in a full car storage bag with desiccant bags inside. I have the same car storage bag that he has. I got it from AutoAnything and it's made by Rhino Shelter. I stored my mint '71 SS/RS Camaro in it over the winter...in an unheated garage with a concrete floor. I covered the car with indoor car cover before closing up the bag.

I would get the cheapest patio blocks or stone you can get and put that down under it as opposed to sitting it on just plain old grass.

Biggest thing here is to keep the water off of it and out from under it, that includes condensation which is very hard to stave off in humid areas. Cold metal and damp air makes unhappy corvette parts.

Whatever you cover it with make sure that it can breath to let the dampness out.

Good luck with the varmints .... they love the frames of these cars and taking your carpet material and seat material and making stinky urine filled bedding out of it in your console, your heater duct and plenum and the frame rails. Maybe in addition to putting patio blocks under it get it as high up a reasonably possible to deter the little critters.

Good luck....have someone start it once a week for 15 mins and pump the breaks at least 10 times once per week to keep the calipers from leaking if possible.

If I were you, I'd spend the most that I had available to protect the car.

If not, you will be spending 10 times that much on repairing damage from not protecting the car well enough.

Do you have a $ amount set aside for a storage area/shed?

How much is the amount....so members can advise you on how best to use the money to protect the car.

(No one on the forum would want to see a decent car destroyed by the elements)

Buy the time you figure a plastic barrier, plywood floor, and a wood box around it... you may be surprised that you could get a pre-fab shed for the same money, or just a little more.

Harbor freight had may still a 12x20 shed in a box with steel frame for 169.95 on sale with an additional 20% coupon .. I would lay down gravel , and put it in that shed if I had to park it out side or use those inflatable bubbles that are like a kids bounce house.
