Default Carpet Install Cost

A friend of mine, will be installing a carpet (Al Knock) kit in my 1970 Coupe.
I plan on paying him, so I'm looking for advice on what to pay him.

Installing a new carpet can take from 2 to 3 hours to install depending on their experience. Paying him is up to you if he offered. When I work on co-workers computers I usually charge them in Beer Hours. 12 pack of beer makes me happy for the hours I spend fixing their computers Money is not the only payment for a Man Cave time so Dinner for doing it? Beer Hours? Choice is yours on this one. If he is like me I do not want money for helping my freinds it is more about the time hanging out. Some I just say buy me lunch and call it good

Carpet alone.........4 hours labor

Soundproofing/insulation also.....another 4 hours.

If the seat mounting bolts are rusted/seized....another 4 hours.

It's up to you to choose the hourly rate.

Ask him what he wants.
Does he have a company and you are using him as a friend to get the job done? If so, I would personally pay the going rate, or close to it.
If he is just doing it because he likes working on cars, I would ask you to help (so you can learn) and we would just drink beer and tell stories after we were done.

^^This, except I would substitute pop for the beer (I don't drink).

Agreed. If the tables were reversed, what would you charge him to help with some task as difficult as a carpet install? Turn about is fair play.

I can't recall what I charged me for this job. If memory serves, we argued over it.

I will also admit it took me more than four hours, but when I'm working for me, I'm usually not in a big hurry.

I've been doing what you said, for the last couple of years. I'm looking at stepping it a notch. I'm sure it will be a fight too get him to take any money.

This is about right unless you have done it before, so hopefully he has. Also if you decide to tackle it yourself, take a look at my video I made. Yes it is a different year but the concepts are the same.

Hi,
I can't imagine doing a first rate carpet installation in a 70 in just 4 hours.
I realize I'm slow and get hung up on the details, but that seems VERY quick.
I think just laying out and cutting the the tabs that cover the seat track bolts can take 30 minutes each, so that's 2 hours right there.
There's a LOT of trimming needed on the front 2 front pieces, the piece on the bulkhead behind the seats, the 2 rear wheel wells, and a bit needed on the rear compartment piece.
I'd think it's an all day job even for an experienced installer.
Regards,
Alan

I agree with Alan on this one. I also think we are forgetting the time it takes to remove all the interior components and taking out the carpet before getting to the carpet installation. Once the carpet is out there is some cleanup and vacuuming that will need to be done.

Its at least 4 hours to get the car in the garage, and get started to take out the seats, e brake console, console, quarter panels, kick panels, etc. then taking out the old carpet, dont forget about the rear storage panels, back light, foot man loops, etc. Clean up. Then you can start on the carpet installation.

My first attempt on a 69 took me about 4 hours to the back and another 4 to do the front. Equivalent to a full day's pay.

I am just starting this, and it is daunting just dry fitting it, since all the trimming is needed. I think it would be less so, if I had removed the carpet originally, but I didn't, so now I am having to visualize as I go.

It took me probably 8 hours to put in the hushmat and the bubble stuff I used on top of it. I expect another 8 to lay the carpet correctly. I have experience doing a 1996, but it did not need to do wheel wells etc, so that may be a help.

Just do it yourself. Who's Al Knock Knock? Who's there? Al Knoch, Al Knoch who?

Al Knoch you out if you don't install my carpet correctly!
