I think the M21 transmission was ONLY availabe with the L-82 engine option. It's my understanding that all L-48 base engine cars had the base M20 transmission.
Hmmm, my 76 L48 has a 76 L82 motor that the PO installed. He told me it has the close ratio gearbox which I thought was the M21. I wonder if he's mistaken or if he swapped out the trannies too. I'm going to try to make contact withhim to verify. How can I identify the otherwise? And how many 76 L48s were built with 4speeds of any type?
Check the partial vin on the transmission to see if it matches the partial vin on the engine stamp pad. My vin is stamped near the Warner info on the drivers side. Another spot is on top: http://www.pontiacpower.org/BW.htm
This will show that he also switched the trans that went with the block. Not however that it is a M21. Could be a L82 with a M20.
The suffix on the engine stamp pad will also tell you what engine you have and when it was built.

GM kept no records of option combinations.

How would one access the build info?

The VIN tag will identify which engine option the car had. The trim tag will identify paint and interior colours and style. If you're lucky there will be a tank sticker on top of the gas tank that will list the options.
It's probably not worth the bother of going after the tank sticker- just look at the car to see what it has/does not have.
