He's a young guy with ideas....let him go for it and learn a few lessons about life....LOL!

Personally......if I had a money-tree...I'd buy every "old car" (vette) that I could find whose owner was a "grandpa".

And since this is the holiday season....he obviously has "visions of sugar-plum-Vettes" in his head.

History needs to be preserved

I don't get it, just like you don't get/have an appreciation of a true classic car, that will only increase in value, vs the other two, which are plentiful, and fast depreciating.
I can only hope that the '72 Vette eventually falls into the hands of someone who appreciates it.
My condolences to the grandparents.
I have an appreciation for the car, not the money to keep it. If i had the money forsure i would keep it and restore it completely but not everyone has the luxury for that or the knowledge to do so. Best thing i would be able to do for that car is change the tires and thats about it. So i plan on selling or trading it with someone who would like to fully restore this car. And also his grandparents know he wants to trade it, id be trading them actually so they know fully whats gunna happen with it and there fine with that.

He better have a long talk with his grandparents BEFORE he trades away a gift like this. They probably think they are giving him an incredible present, something they have been holding on to for years, and he is treating it like garbage. This could do some serious relationship damage.

Just my 2 cents.
His grandparents already know that he wants to trade and there fine with that. It pretty much just sits now and he has his license but isnt even driving it so they figured might as well since hes getting a car he wants.

JMC, Bottom line is that you need to do what ever you feel is rite. C3 owners on this forum are very protective of these classic cars and hold them on such a pedestal, its hard to reach. (Myself included)
If the grandparents are ok with what your friend is planning on doing then there will be no conflict there. Now think about this, if the car that you trade them breaks down in the near future, the grandparents may hold you accountable and give there grandson grief because they could say... look, we gave you a good running car and a classic at that. I understand that not everyone has the $$$ to put into a 72 to make it stand out but as was mentioned before, the feeling of driving my 73 on the open road is an experience that is hard to describe. I was away from home for a month and a half and when I got home I kissed my wife hello and left my suitcase in the garage and took my Vette out for a 2 hour drive. Sorry I'm rambling....
As for the other guys here on the forum, I remember when I got my license & the car offered to me to drive was a 59 *****'s jeep that didn't have a seat in the drivers side so I used a lawn chair. That's how bad I just wanted to drive. 8 years ago when my daughter got her license, she didn't want to drive the wife's Mazda because of the color. WTF happened to today's kids? I think that JMC should get the car from the other kid and hopefully either trade or sell it to a mature person who will appreciate the true value of this classic and take care of it as such. Just my 3 cents.

My two cents worth as a father and grandfather. Take your Mustang into a lot that has the car you really want to end up with. Buy it. Assist the 16 yo with TRADING or SELLING the Vette. Your bank account will stay intact and the 16 YO can buy a car that he won't wrap around a tree or pole the first time the roads get wet. I had newly minted driver (son) that wanted to buy a crotch rocket in the dead of winter just because it sounded cool,

also as a father and grandfather i worry about giving a 16 year old a 40 year car that doesn't have any modern safety features, and probably has a rusted frame that's half as strong as it was when new.
having been a teenager in the early sixties, i can testify that gm, mopar and ford killed as many young men as the then ongoing south east asian conflict.
