Default VIN Discrepency...help!!

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a bit of confusion I'm having as I decided to look into the history of the 1972 Corvette Convertible I bought a few years ago. It was a last min, quick buy....so I didnt really do a lot of research. I bought it out of a private collection from a reputable local collector. I'm pretty mechanical and have had a handful of muscle & project cars over the years, so I felt comfortable when I looked over the Numbers Matching vette I'm referring to. However, I recently discovered the VIN is a 1Z37, which says its a "coupe", when it is indeed a two top convertible. Even the local classic vette dealer inspected it and confirmed it was a #'s matching car in (mostly) original condition. Is it possible Chevrolet made a mistake?? When talking to several local mechanics, I was told the cost to turn a coupe into a conv that looks like it IS a factory conv would far exceed what it would cost to just buy one? HELP!!?!? Any ideas? Any thoughts?? Please???

What does the VIN tag say? It's on the driver's windshield post and visible from outside the car.
