Any one had any luck with a windshield repair? I have the original glass for my 77 and while removing it I chipped a piece about the size of a nickel off the top. Half of it is under the trim. I caught it before it fell believe it or not. So I have the piece but didn't know if it could be glued so it didn't show. It's about the thickness of a dime so it's just a little too deep to leave alone. The glass repair kits at the parts store seem to be focused on filling in starburst type of chips. Any thoughts?
Hi 77,
You describe the chip as being near the edge of the glass.
If it in fact extends to the edge of the glass, a crack will VERY likely begin to grow from it when you start to drive the car.
MANY people report a nick at the edge of the glass being the starting point for a crack as pressure is put on the glass while re-instsalling it, or driving over a bump or pot hole.
Sad! But true!
Regards,
Alan
Replace it is. It really stinks. I went to such efforts to get it out and then I got that chip shortly before I was done. At least I got the rear glass out without a problem.
For my 2 cents, I would put it back in and if it gets worse over time then replace it. last year I went through replacing the windshield in my 69 vert and had a heck of a time finding one to fit. The aftermarket glass available today really sucks. My original glass fit fine, but had cracks and I had to reshape my windshield frame to get a new windshield to fit and it is not that great. The forum overall from many listings recommended Pilkington glass. That is what I ended up using, however we chose the best of 3 pilkington windshields we found locally. This was a shock to me ( all 3 had different curvature ) over the whole width. I chose the best fit, had the glass installer leave it and I made changes to the windshield frame on my car to fit it better.
With all the problems I went through I would keep the original glass until it has cracks that distract you when driving it. There might be a local repair shop that can inject clear repair product to make the cracks look better.
Just my 2 cents (not impressed with the aftermarket glass) I think it isn't as good as it was a couple of years ago.
Read this post with interest since I'm going to have to replace my 70 windshield glass.
I'm planning on replacing the window glass in my 68. I've already bought the Pilkerington glass. They have the repro rights on my 68 window glass windows..they can legally repro the windows with the Libby Owens Ford logos.
Pilkerington...don't know about Pilkerington? They are the worlds largest manufacturers of automobile window glass. They bought out Libby Owens Ford some time ago. They've had a lot of legal problems with the US because they appear to have a monopoly control on auto window glass. Pilkerington, an English company originally, is now owned by a Japanese company.
i just bought a new Pilkington windshield today for my 68. Hopefully I can test fit it tomorrow. I hope I got a good one that wasn't made late on a Friday afternoon.
considering how much the birdcage flexes- you wouldn't think twice about replacing the glass. I would guess it would crack pretty quickly - like within minutes - once you start driving.
Did a test fit today with my new Pilkington windshield. It was made in Mexico and it looks like it will be just fine. I hope I got lucky getting a good one.
