Default Protect-O-Plate Documention

Thought I’d share …

While browsing through my 70 AIM (of all things), I came across a sheet that explains the data coded on my Protect-O-Plate, which might be of interest to some. For example:

Looking at the Protect-O-Plate in a mirror, in the upper right corner of the metal tag is a letter which represents the Carb Source:
B ---- Bay City
C ---- Carter
H ---- Holley (it’s misspelled ‘Holly’ in the AIM)
R ---- Rochester

Mine's a Carter.

There's more info there that duplicates some info found on the build sheet.

70Y,
You're right, there's a lot of information on the plate..... I guess more than any place else on the car since it lists the VIN, Engine Assembly Information, and many but not all options.
UPC 0, Sheet B-3.
Regards,
Alan

Most importantly it lists the entire drive train for a particular car!

For the applicable model years, AIMs have a page showing the plate information codes because the plates were stamped at the factory and shipped with the car.

The Protecto-Plate was to be used for warranty repairs and service.

I'm looking at the page in my AIM. Where are the corresponding codes located? Am I missing something? I only see codes for carb and month of build.

Thanks!
Jay

If you look at the top center of the AIM page, you see the plate matrix, showing the position on the plate where the codes are located.
(My AIM shows codes in rows A, B, and C only).

At position
A-15 -- Vehicle Serial Number
***A-29 - Carb Source
B-1 --- Engine Source, Date, & 3 Digit Type Code
B-15 -- 3 Digit Rear Axle Type, Date & Source Code
#B-29 -- Month Produced
*C-1 --- Chevrolet Manufactured Use Source & Date
*C-15 -- Power Steering Code; 1 = N40
*C-16 -- Power Brake Code; 1 = J50
*C-17 -- Radio Code; 3 = U69 or U79
*C-19 -- Air Conditioning Code; 1 = C60
*C-20 -- Power Window Code; 3 = A31
The *** refers to the Carb Manufacturer Table
Bay City --- B
Carter ----- C
Holley ----- H
Rochester - R
The # refers to the Month Table - Jan = 1, Feb = 2, etc.
The * refers to note - for other plate details, see DSSM No. 6.

So if you card is blank at any of the matrix positions, your car did not originally have that option.

JSYK, I just found this sheet, so I'm certainly not an expert. I'm still not sure what the code at C-1 means, and also where to find DSSM No.6.

Let's hope others can help.
