I was just getting ready to remove my valve covers on my '77. The left side looks easy, but on right side I have the A.I.R hose and a heater hose crossing right over the top of the valve cover. Will I have to disconnect the hoses to remove the cover. It looks real tight and I have to lift the cover to clear the rockers...
Moving the AIR pump and removing that heater hose is relatively easy (compared to moving the A/C compressor ). You may lose a bit of coolant, but that is easily replaced.
On my 76 I take off the AIR hose at the pump. That's easy. I also take off the EGR valve instead of the heater hose, because I dislike dealing with coolant, gives me just enough room to take off the valve cover.
So I do have to remove the heater hose..... Well, its very cold here in New York right now and my garage is not heated. So I think I'm going to wait for it to warm up a little. I don't want to deal with cold coolant when its 15 degrees.
Removing that heater hose requires a screwdriver and 5 minutes work (tops!). If you were considering doing the valve cover removal in that weather, the heater hose should not cause you that much concern.
It is a fast job. You probably don't have to remove the heater hose, but it is a couple of minutes like 7T1 says. You won't lose much coolant, just what is sitting in the bottom of the hose at that location. Ease the hose off instead of yanking and put a cloth under it and there won't be much mess. Alternatively, taking off the EGR is a couple of bolts and easy...but the heater hose is faster.
On my car, there was enough extra length on the heater hose that I was able to make some slack above the valve cover, and remove the cover it by pulling it rearward.
