Hi Guys,
I know, we've discussed this before. Were they originally painted or not? Some swear yes and others no. I have a May 68 and have never seen an original off a car that had any trace of paint. I think we came to the conclusion some were and some were not? I forget. Anyway, saw this ad and got me thinking again.

John,
my coupe was completed June 14th, 1968.
My interior is survivor original, to include the radio ***** you gave me.
My console flag is void of any paint.
The interior doesn't appear to have any excessive wear else where as car has 80,000 orig. miles.
I thought maybe it wore off as well?
But... the rest of the interior is not abused to include orig. seat covers and rugs, the rugs just shrank a little along the console.
So I'd like to hear the juries verdict on this one.
For documentation sake mine is unpainted and I do not see traces of it ever being painted.
I thought about doing it but it is so small I wouldn't even attempt it with these aging eyes.
Stay Safe My Friend,
Marshal

Hey Marshal!!
I bought my 68 in 1985 and there were/ are no signs of paint either. I know someone here is an original owner of an early car that has painted flags....

I believe that is Wally Knoch. He may chime in. My 68 has a completely original, unrestored interior. When I bought it about 7 years ago it had faint traces of paint in the flags. I have since touched them up. I believe they were painted at the factory, but I'm sure others may disagree. They certainly look better painted.
Richard Prince has a '68 in very clean, original condition in his 1968-1982 Restoration Guide. I believe it belongs to a forum member (JAXLT1?). There is a close-up picture of the cross flags on the shifter plate that shows them painted.
Here is a picture from the amazon preview. It is not the picture I am thinking of, but you can still see part of the left flag, which is painted.
Yes, they were painted when new. When have you ever seen a bare Chevy emblem? I bought my 68 coupe when it was four years old. The heat of the sun would make the paint flake off after a few years. Lou.
...sometimes even NOS parts weren't the same as production line pieces. Both of my '68s(one was an NCRS Bowtie/Bloomington Gold Survivor car that I sold)"appear" to have the original paint on that emblem.
