I've had one in the back, loose for about a year. If the tops or jackets are back there, it's easy to wedge, but I hate having it rolling or sliding around.
I just didn't like the look on the floor in front of the seats, so I mounted one in my 69 behind the passenger seat. Drilled two holes in compartment lid and fastened the bracket with 8-32 screws and nuts. Still easy to grab with your right hand, and the storage compartment is fully usable.
I don't like the look of them on the floor in front of the seat either, so I did the exact same as you!
how big of an extinguisher do we need, or what are the specs of one that will actually be usable in a car fire?
You should get an "A B C" fire extinguisher. They are good for electrical, liquid, or solids (wood, paper etc). The number 5, 10 etc. tells you the size. Basically a 10 is twice as good as a 5. Size does matter.
I have 10's in both my Vettes and they are mounted vertically between the seats. My other vehicles only have 5's but I'd only be half as upset if one of those burned.
I have seen 5's put out a couple of fires on cars and a fire on a kerosene heater so if I ever really need my 10's I think the damage will be severe.
I have never had a flat out on the road but two times a car would haveburnt up if not for having extinguishers, one was Mikes ZRBug, pulled up in my driveway without a clue the engine was on fire,
The other was a carb fire on my 69, that was funny, I grabbed the extinguisher and pointed it at the fire and forgot to take the mount off it, I got a face full but got the fire out.....
Many car shows that require you to have an extinguisher specify a 8 pounder, minimum. The idea is that you have one large enough to put out the 'initial' blaze...not put out a full-fledged bonfire. If you see smoke and can get to it quickly enough, you might save the car. If you don't have an extinguisher....well....
And, I can think of many scenarios, on a well-kept C3, where hot-spots can initiate. Stuck brake caliper, stuck parking brake mechanism, failure inside ANY powered electrical device (dead short?...MEGA amps ).
Sh!+ happens!! Mechanical devices fail!! Not having an extinguisher is akin to not wearing your seatbelt. You can believe that YOU won't cause an accident (or a fire); but you CAN'T prevent one from happening.
My first Vette, a '77, caught fire. A wire got up against the exhaust and lit up. Saw tiny wisps of smoke from under the hood....pulled over as fast as I could!
Good size fire by then...
I had a fire extinguisher...small fire but it saved my car
