Default Engine ID question

I have a 69 convertible, and was looking at the engine code (right side front of engine) and saw the stamp of CEOA488 59. Does anyone have any idea what the heck this is? I know its a small block, but cannot find any info about it. Thanks in advance!

CE is Chevrolet Engine. 0 is for 1970. The rest is a sequential serial number that is not tied to engine config. or horsepower.

It's an over the counter replacement or warranty short block.

Hi Nola,

In your case, it might have been installed as a warranty replacement. Do you know what your '69 originally came with, the 300HP or 350HP small block? There are some indications (like tach redline, console plate) but these can be changed out. Or any original documentation (POP, tank sticker)?

This would give you a more educated guess as to what the engine could be, but you will not have full knowledge of the rotating assembly unless you decided to crack it open.

The block casting number might help identify it.

About the only way to tell what you got lurking there is pull the pan and peek at the main bearing caps. 2-bolt would be lo-po or base engine, 4-bolt likely a 350/350 replacement. Maybe head casting #'s could provide some clue as well.
