Default Corner header piece weldable?

Context: 77 corvette, corner header trim piece (chrome, top corner of windshield that contains the front t-top alignment pin)

Each of mine have a 3/8" "divot" knocked out of them and wondering the metal type if these can be welded. Are they pot metal?

I was planning to powder coat all the t-top trim black and would prefer not to spend $200 on new ones to turn around and strip and coat.

Thanks

Yes, they are pot metal (zinc diecast, white metal, or whatever you chose to call it). Pot metal can be welded, but it's not easy to do, because of it's low melting point.

I'm sure if you want a pair just to have powder coated, you should be able to find some used ones to work with. Used ones are almost always pitted, but if you're powder coating them anyway, I'm sure you can get an acceptable surface with just some sanding and grinding.

Hi 97,
I believe there's a 'filler' that can be used under powder coating.
It might be just the thing for your casting's flaw.

Alan

Go to muggyweld.com They have pot metal filler with a temperature indicating flux so you don't melt the pot metal.
