brake light switch
hi...in have a 79 with c/c. the cruse used to work now and then, lately it has been then. I am trying to change the brake light switch hoping that this will solve the problem. How do I remove it without damaging the retainer? As always, any help or comments are welcome.......thanks

It's not as simple as disconnecting the plug and unscrewing the switch?

Unfortunately it does not screw in. You just push in the new switch, but to remove it you have to release the retainer which it pushes into. The shape of the switch does not allow it to turn. I have to find out how to release the old switch without damaging a very thin piece of metal with a couple of small teeth (this is what holds the switch in place).

Have you tested the switch to see if it is the problem? Might save you some time replacing it if it is not even the problem.

I know that the brake lights work but I don't know how to test cruise control to see if that is working right (other than driving).

are you sure there aren't two switches, one for brakes and one for cc?

Not real sure when GM did this but usually the CC is routed through the turn signal switch in the steering column not the brake light switch?

to enable the c/c there is a button on the t/s switch, but to disengage there is a switch within the lite switch.

from what I can see there is only one but vision is limited up there. when I ordered the switch I had to choose w/cruise or not.
