the orange wire that powered up the lighter ran from the fuse panel.. it is also the same orange circuit that is used by the courtesy lamps and many other orange wires...
Here is a 71 factory jpg schematic... you can save this to your desktop by copy and pasting it into your paint program.. then trace the wires and you'll see where the orange wires go.. (and the gray for the lamp) which is tied into all the dash lamps in the car.

I do have that connector so that is good. I wasn't sure if it was the right connector because the new housing I bought didn't have the "blade" connector on the bottom to use the connector. It must be sold separately. Some how the housing retainer I bought also was incorrect because it didn't have the holes in the side to connect the light and also the treads are too large on the bottom to connect the 2 pieces together.
odd.. I cant check today but the lighter housing we show on the site shows a bullet on the bottom and not the blade either. I wonder if the pic is wrong... I'll have to look at this on Monday. .
Those are perfect Alan.. Just what I needed to see. It looks like they used the wrong housing in mine. I couldn't attach the light so I will have to pick up a new housing. Mine does have the blade connect like yours on the bottom. I wasn't sure if mine was correct, where the blade connector just screws on the bottom.
I was able to get everything hooked up correctly and the light mounted. My problem is the lighter still doesn't heat up. I can use my phone charger and it works great. I even tested the lighter itself in another car and it works. I'm not sure if the lighter doesn't press down enough to heat or what. The light come on and I know I have power. It's a reproduction housing so not sure if they don't work well or what..
you need to check the ground hook up the to the shift bezel, double black wire, push on terminal, there should be a spade terminal that mounts to one of the 5 phillip screws on back of the bezel. T

If the charger works in the outlet, and the lamp comes on, wouldn`t that indicate there is a ground?
(just curious, as I`m getting close to installing the interior in my 71 also)
Hi,
I believe on 71s the ground for the shifter plate is through the ground connection on the right side of the heater/defroster controller.
Ground is in the right upper corner in the pic.
63,
I looked at the way the lighter element seems to work… and I guess I'd try holding it in the 'pushed' position and maybe wiggling it a bit to see if that helps make the connection.
Does the element seem to be fully 'seating' in the 'clips' that grab it as you push it in?
Otherwise?
Regards,
Alan
It seems to seat pretty well. I did try it when I had it apart and it did heat up. It was just once I put it in the console that it didn't seem to heat up. It does seem like it might just not be hitting quite enough right now so maybe moving it around a little might work. I just wasn't sure it the reproduction might just be a little off when it doesn't quite work as well as an original. I know I have power and ground so it just has to be something simple that will take a little work. I'll have to keep my eye open for an original one that might work better..
Thanks,
Matt
