My 68 vette has an sequence number starting with 4. Everything I find online states that it should start with 1. Any ideas why my serial number would be correct with the exception of the 4

All 68's had a VIN that started with 194378S4##### (coupe) or 194678S4#####(convertible).
Where does your "#4" fit into that sequence? Numbers after the "4" starts (above) are the numeric sequence of build for that year. For example, 194678S4000001 would be the first 1968 Corvette built in 1968.

Where in that 13 character VIN is your #4?
In 68 I believe that 28566 cars were built so your sequence number would start with 0,1 or 2 as an example my 68 coupe is vin # 194378S418606 show us your entire vin # and someone here on the Forum should be able to answer your question.

Be wary of online sources. You should make an attempt to determine who is providing the information and whether those folks know what they're talking about.

Your serial number would be incorrect without the 4.
