Default Big block or not?

I went today to look a 1971 big block car. I am no expert but the tach has a redline of 5300. The car has a rear sway bar and the sticker on the cowl under the hood has a 454 tag. I looked at the caps on the diff but not sure what I am looking for. I have searched on here and found a ton of info! The car has been wrecked but has the original engine but I could not look at it today so the jury is still out on that! The tach keeps throwing me for a loop! The car has been in storage since it had the wreck in 83. I sure don't think it was cloned back then. Anything I am missing?? Thanks

Do you mean orange starting at 5300- and red starting at 5600? If so that's correct for a LS5.

The 5300 redline is a major concern. Beware but yes, be sure you aren't counting the orange as the red line.

The red part should be at 5600. If it isn't major red flag.

Pictures would be nice and we can really see what is going on.

I would hold off on making any purchase until you can rule out the obvious issues.

Check the numbers stamped on the engine pad. One will identify the engine; the second will be the VIN derivitive.

I will post some pics later tonight. Used to be a nice car war bonnet yellow. The last digits on the vin should be on the block right?

Wow those are some tough pictures to look at there.

But as long as the tach looks like this and it appears to be:

You are off to a right start. But, now at this point we need to take a look at the stamp pad now. Go back and get some shots of that. See if we can get some clear pics and go from there.

Well the engine that came out of it appears to be a service block!! So much for the matching numbers engine. All the other things match up perfect from the tach to the sway bar.

Hey, if the price is right that might be a great bargaining chip..........after all, you're still looking at a big block C3.
