What backspacing do you have?
Sounds like you need some spacers

Go with 245 or 255 and see if you can return the 235's

The stock tires most C3's were delivered with had a 27+ inch height. Your 235/50's are approx. 26 inch height. If you want to duplicate the wheelwell filling look of stock, you need 255/50's, which have a height of 27.1 inches

What he said.... Also, if you do that, your speedometer won't need an 'adjustment'.

Default wheels

I already bought the tires and put them on the rims. So that is out of the question. I will deal with try h What I bought. All I wanted to know is What route I should use to lower the car.

You didn't say anything about "lowering the car". You asked "what to do?"

The tires are too small for the car...period.

If you want to lower the car, replace the spring-to-trailing arm bolts with longer 8 inch long bolts.

How did you come to the decision to buy 235/50/17's?

I have 26'' tires on my car as well although they are 255/45ZR17, so a little wider than yours. I also have the correct backspace, you haven't said what your backspace is yet.

with a 26'' tire you absolutely have to lower the car or it will look funny. I used 8'' bolts in the rear and cut one tight coil off the stock front springs.
