Why Radial T/A?

One reason the BFG tires look right is they were a viable high performance tire for our cars in the early 70s. I put on a set of Radial T/As when I realized how bad the original bias ply junk Goodyear tires were. Suddenly the car handled well, didn't shake all the time and didn't follow every groove and streetcar track I came to.
John Greenwood was racing on them, with lots of BFG graphics on the car. The tires were advertised heavily as performance tires.
I often wonder if BFG lowered the quality, or if quality standards have risen so much that the Radial T/As have to be speed limited. Too bad they don't build then like they used to.

I have it from a good source that Michelin makes the Goodrich T/A tires. That went a long way in my decision to buy them.

You're right they aren't junk tires, but it would be nice if Michelin (bought the Goodrich tire line in 1988) put some of their current tire technology in the tires we need. Probably the down side of that would be a drastic increase in price. The Pilot Sport ZP set I put on my ZO6 cost me ~$2,200. Not many of us in the C3 world would play at that price point. Pete

18 inch wheels for the 70. Torque Thrust II wheels.

From what little I know, there are no more quality modern tires being manufactured in 15 inch wheel sizes.

Me too. I just replaced my 18 year old Goodyears with Cooper Cobras. Higher speed rating than BFG T/As and the white letters are about the same size. $80 each at Discount Tire. Quieter than my old Goodyears too.

I like the TA Radials and have run them on a few different cars over the years. This time I went with Cooper Cobras, and have been very happy with them. I like the way they look, handle and ride. As F4 said, they also have a higher speed rating than the TA does and it was almost $80 less than the TA for a set of 4 at Discount Tire.
Money well spent IMO.
275/60 in the rear and 235/60 in the front.

The 275's are like that because the 8" wheels are to narrow. They need 10" wide wheels to fit correctly.

i offer up the possibility that some may prefer the slightly more modern look of the hollowed out raised white letter.these are excellent tires and cost a lot more than t/a's and may be perfect for those that run year round,like me.
