1968 roadster, this wire comes off a capacitor on the back of the tach and is not connected to anything, It's just hanging there and the tach still works, anyone know where it goes? The picture is flipped sideways
It's odd that if it is for the tach and not connected to anything you would think the tach wouldn't work, but that's the least of my problems! I have a lot of stuff not working on this car.
Your tach is mecanical so that wire has nothing to do with it working other than maybe the ground for lights.
But that connector looks like a packard connector which goes into the firewall bulk head connector?
Does anything in the car NOT work? What I recall is that any capacitor in the car was used for noise suppression for the radio.
Black wires are usually ground but I recall that the ammeter gauge wires are both black I believe. You also have an ignition switch in the dash not the column so did it come out of the ignition switch connector maybe?
My 69 diagram shows 2 grounds that go to both the speedo and tach I believe used to make a ground so that the gauge lights work. 69 is way different than 68.

The gauge lights work on the speedo and tach but a lot of other stuff dosn't. Clock, ammeter, fuel, door ajar alarm, door open lights, wipers.
Well... the clock and lighter are on the same fuse in my car orange wire. The fuel, door ajar, water temp are on another fuse via a pink wire.
My ammeter is two black wires that go across both bulkhead connectors one side to the ignition harness where the 12 volts comes to the horn relay and the other side across headlamp harness to the main red wire that feeds the fuse panel.
I was thinking maybe a fuse but then maybe a ground but then the fuel gauge gets its ground from the sending unit in the tank.
You most likely have multiple issue with the gauges that you will have to shoot one at a time.
