There isn't a perfectly working sender but with this adjustable resistor you'll be able to dial in the gauge to match the sender.

I don't think that is the issue.

The sender worked fine for over a year, then just pegged. Then after a few months started to move around, first indicating a red overheat, then just hot, and now starts at hot (engine is cold) and slowly starts showing normal temps.

Are you sure the connector is on the sender is in good shape. If it's moving around on the terminal or if there is corrosion then that could also be your issue.

The best way to tell is to unplug the sender and put an ohm meter on the sender while it comes up. See if it acts in the erratic manner.

Well, I dare (took only 3 years of convincing myself...).

But, unfortunately, the links to the pictures in the OP are broken. Text only is already pretty instructive but, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Also, I failed to find an equivalent writeup on Willcox' site.

Any help on the horizon (fixed links) / did I miss something (writeup)?

[And yes, I know that Willcox nowadays has a different solution for the new-sender-w/-old-gauge problem. But I want to refurbish the old stuff - I just am that way...]
