I have some valve covers, identical to the stamped steel ones but no tabs on them, the guy told me they were off his 68 from 1970 or so. I have heard of these but never seen them. I went to get a trim ring I needed for my car and guy wanted to make deal on everything, an all or nothing deal...wouldnt sell trim ring alone. Anyone school me on these?
If you only need one trim ring...buy just one trim ring. I'm not sure if the '68 327/350 hp SB engine had chrome covers or not. The base engine got orange covers. In '69, I think the L-46 got the cast alum covers that later went on the LT-1 engines.
The 68 327/350 used chrome plated, stamped steel valve covers. The covers are identical to the painted covers, used on the base 68 engine, as well as most other 68 small block Chevrolet's.
The 68 covers are pretty easy to identify. Unlike earlier covers, the top of each cover is smooth, and each has a single hole in it. The left cover's hole is for the PCV, and the right one is for the valve cover to air cleaner breather tube. 67 and earlier covers have no holes in them, while 69 and up covers, have two holes in the left cover, with the additional hole for the oil fill cap. 68's had the oil fill in the intake. There are no part numbers on the covers, but I understand that there may be a small manufacturers logo, stamped into the side of them. The left and right covers, appear to be identical, and I don't think there are any wire clips on them.
Besides the 68 327/350, the same chrome covers were used on the 68 Z/28, and the 68 Camaro SS-350.
